Built between 1875 and 1884, the opera house combines neo-Renaissance and Baroque styles by the seminal architect of the time Miklós Ybl. In the front, curving staircases lead on either side to the tripartite portico and driveway. On either side are the porticos with statues of Franz Liszt and Ferenc Erkel by the great Hungarian artist Alajos Stróbl. Entering the building your gaze is drawn to the buffet in the foyer, and the richly designed grand staircase. One of the most beautiful in all of Europe, a night performance in this fabulous structure takes one back immediately to the turn of the century when The Palace of Andrássy Street hosted the Hapsburgs in artistic opulence. Book your seat in an opera booth among the five stories of balconies and join those who likewise view from the royal viewing box, amid richly gilded boxes, red velvet banquettes, damask-covered walls, and rich Baroque chandeliers. Daily tours at about 800 HUF can give you a sample without the concert.
